Bianchi completes test programme at Barcelona

On Tuesday and Wednesday, a two day test session was held at the Catalunya Circuit near Barcelona for all runners in the Formula Renault 3.5 series. This was Jules Bianchi’s second test of the season in the new Dallara, which will be the car used in the championship until the end of 2014. With his Tech 1 team, the Frenchman worked on fine tuning the car. On the first day, he completed 33 laps and was tenth fastest on a dry track. The next day saw him run just on rain tyres, covering 72 laps on his way to sixth fastest.

“We had to change our plans because it rained a lot over the two days, making it impossible to run through the planned programme on slick tyres with a dry set-up,” said Bianchi. “But it provided a good opportunity to set up the car on rain tyres and I am pleased with what we achieved.”

The first morning was run in the wet and only in the afternoon did drivers finally get a chance to fit dry tyres. “I immediately had a good feeling in the dry,” commented Bianchi, who was quickest on used tyres. “Then, we all fitted a first set of new tyres, but from then on the session kept getting red flagged. After the fourth stop in the space of a few minutes, I went with a second set of new tyres, but again we were stopped by the red flag. I had set the quickest time, but it was cancelled as per the rules.”

The second day’s work centred on trying to find the best set-up on a wet track. “We got through a lot of work,” added Jules. “I am pleased with the progressive improvement we made with the car with each passing session. I was lacking any reference point in the wet and this test was a great opportunity to gain confidence with the car and the tyres.”

Bianchi’s next task is at the Alcaniz track on 18 and 19 April. This will be the final test session prior to the start of the championship, on the same Spanish track on 5 and 6 May.
